Today, in America, your pastor is denied free speech from the pulpit of the church. To maintain their church’s tax exemption, pastors feel pressured to self-censor their sermons by avoiding the topic of political candidates.
Since America’s founding, pastors were free to speak on leading issues of their day, including political candidates. That changed in 1954 when then-Senator Lyndon Johnson convinced Congress to amend the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) tax code to limit what pastors can and cannot say. Churches found in violation can lose their tax exemption.
Many pastors and the Alliance Defense Fund believe the Johnson Amendment is unconstitutional in restricting the subject of sermons delivered from the pulpits of churches. On September 26, courageous pastors participating in “Pulpit Freedom Sunday” will speak to their congregations about crucial topics of their choosing. The initiative is designed to return freedom to the pulpit by allowing pastors to speak out on the profound and important issues of the day.
Please support your pastor and thousands more with a generous gift to ADF today.
